Cameroon gains laurels in Accra : 22nd Board Meeting of the Regional Maritime University (RMU)


As part of the resolutions at the end of the said Board Meeting which held on 14 June 2019, the Post of Director of Academic Affairs was exclusively reserved to a Cameroonian, the Minister of Transport was elected Board Chair till the next session that will hold in Cameroon and during which the RMU will award an “Honorary Doctorate Degree” to the President of the Republic H.E. Paul BIYA.

The Minister of Transport Jean-Ernest Masséna NGALLE BIBEHE represented Cameroon at this high level meeting.Cameroon is part of the five founding States, together with Ghana, the Gambia, Sierra Leone and Liberia. For the past 20 years, Cameroon had not occupied, within this institution, a managerial responsibility and the issue was raised and debated upon during the Board Meeting.

At the end of the Meeting, the Board adopted the resolution to reserve the prestigious position of Director of Academic Affairs to Cameroon. During the next session, the Minister of Transport will take over the chairmanship of the RMU Board of Governors for two years. And on this occasion, the President of the Republic of Cameroon, His Excellency Paul BIYA will be awarded an “Honorary Doctorate Degree” for his support, assistance and permanent dedication that helped to raise this university to the regional and international levels. In addition, students from this university were awarded end of couse certificates last June 15 and on the same occasion the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, MAADA BIO, the former President of the Republic of GHANA, John AGYEKUM KUFUOR and the former Rector of RMU, Captain Aaron OBENG TURKSON received “Honorary Doctorate Degrees”.

Headquartered in Accra (Republic of Ghana) and emanating from all West and Central African English–speaking countries, (The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ghana and Cameroon), this institution is first and foremost a nautical school (Regional Maritime Academy). Founded in 1983 by the Former President of the Republic of Ghana, John AGYEKUM KUFUOR, its statute changed on 25 October 2007 to become the Regional Maritime University (RMU).
